Beginner Drawing Exercise 6: How to Draw a Cute Mushroom Family πŸ„

Here comes the next Level 1 drawing practice for absolute beginner artists!

In this exercise, we’ll go through some simple steps to draw an adorable mushroom family. πŸ₯°

Beginner drawing practice 6 - Intro

I hope you've already practiced some of the previous Level 0 and Level 1 exercises in this blog. However, if you're new here—welcome! πŸŽ‰ You're invited to explore other beginner-friendly exercises here.

This blog is created for anyone who dreams of starting their art journey but doesn’t know how to take the first step. And the best part? Every content here is 100% free! πŸ’•

Now, let’s jump right in and start drawing! ✏️

Step 1: What to Prepare

If you love digital drawing and use tools like an iPad or drawing tablet, feel free to use them. However, for beginners, fancy tools aren’t necessary.

Here’s all you need for today’s practice:
- A piece of paper
- A pencil
- An eraser
- Colored pencils or crayons

That’s it! Super easy, right? πŸ₯³ Now, let’s move on!

Step 2: What to Draw

Like always, we’ll start by analyzing a reference photo to make drawing easier.

Beginner drawing practice 6 - Reference
Source: Pinterest

Forget about the leaves—just focus on the three mushrooms. πŸ„πŸ„πŸ„ They might look a bit messy, but don’t worry! We’ll simplify them in the next step.

✏️ Step 3: How to Draw

Grab your pencil and paper, and sketch three imperfect circles like this:

Beginner drawing practice 6 - Step 1

Why imperfect circles?🧐 Because most things in nature aren’t perfectly round! If you're new to this, you can practice with my Easy First Drawing Exercise for Beginners. You can also see that I have changed the positioning of these mushrooms compared with the reference photo. This is how we are going to simplify today's artwork.

Now, let’s add the mushroom stems by drawing three slightly curved rectangles.

Beginner drawing practice 6 - Step 2

πŸ’‘ Tip: Make the bottom part of the stems a bit wider to create a cute and chubby look.

Once you’re happy with the shapes, grab a black/brown marker or a dark-colored pencil and retrace the outlines. Then, erase the messy pencil marks.

Beginner drawing practice 6 - Step 3

Now you have a clean sketch! πŸŽ‰

Step 4: How to Color

Time to bring these mushrooms to life! 🌈

Beginner drawing practice 6 - Step 4

I decided to switch things up and use a turquoise blue instead of the usual red. But feel free to pick any color you like! πŸŽ¨πŸ’™πŸ’š❤️

Beginner drawing practice 6 - Step 5

For the stems, I chose a warm yellow-brown tone. But you can also use light brown or beige.

Now, grab your white colored pencil or crayon and add cute little dots to the mushroom hats!

Beginner drawing practice 6 - Step 6

Looking great, right? We’re almost done! ✨

Step 5: Make Your Drawing More Lively

To make your mushrooms less flat, let’s add simple shading.

Beginner drawing practice 6 - Step 7

Use a darker turquoise for the mushroom hats and a darker yellow/brown for the stems. Shading adds depth and makes your drawing pop!

Now, grab a brown colored pencil and add tiny strokes to the mushroom stems, like this:

Beginner drawing practice 6 - Step 8

Now your mushrooms look alive and textured! πŸ„✨

Step 6: Add Personality to Your Drawing

This is my favorite part! πŸ₯° Giving your drawing a fun personality.

Beginner drawing practice 6 - Step 9

I gave my mushrooms three different facial expressions—but you can create any face you like! πŸ˜†πŸ˜‘πŸ˜Œ

πŸ’‘ Bonus Tip: Add tiny cheeks (orange dots) to make them extra adorable! 🧑

Before finishing, let’s decorate the background:

Firstly, a simple shadow at the base.

Beginner drawing practice 6 - Step 10

Secondly, raindrops falling from the sky.

Beginner drawing practice 6 - Step 11

Now, our mushroom family is complete! ✨

Beginner Drawing Exercise 5: How to Draw a Dancing Strawberry

Hello, my friend! Welcome to another fun and easy drawing practice for absolute beginner artists. If this is your first time visiting my Blog, a big warm welcome to you! πŸ˜„ This space is dedicated to helping beginner artists (like you and me) start their art journey through simple, step-by-step drawing exercises.

Each exercise is organized into different levels to help you progress at your own pace. If you’re curious about how this Blog is structured, feel free to check out Simple Drawing Guidelines for Absolute Beginner Artists.

If you’ve already joined me in other Level 1 drawing practices, are you ready to create more cute and fun fruit characters? Today, we’re going to draw a dancing strawberry that’s sure to boost your mood.

Beginner drawing practice 5 - Intro
Let’s get started!

Step 1: Gather Your Drawing Tools

You don’t need fancy art supplies to get started! As always, I recommend sticking to the basics:

  • A piece of paper

  • A pencil

  • An eraser

  • Colored pencils or crayons in red, green, and pink

  • A marker or black/brown colored pencil (optional)

Simple, right? The key is to keep things easy and fun. Now, let's dive into today’s beginner drawing practice!

Step 2: Observe the Reference Photo

Using a reference photo is an essential step for beginner artists, as it helps train your eyes to see shapes and details. Here’s the reference photo for this practice:

Beginner drawing practice 5 - Reference
Source: Pinterest

I chose this strawberry because it looks so yummy! πŸ˜‹ At first glance, it may seem a bit complicated with all those little details, but don’t worry! The purpose of this Blog is to simplify each drawing subject and help you gain confidence in your art journey.

Step 3: Sketch the Main Details

Grab your pencil and start by drawing an imperfect circle, like this:

Beginner drawing practice 5 - Step 1

If the idea of drawing “imperfect circles” is new to you, check out Easy First Drawing Exercise for Beginners. It will help you get comfortable with drawing circles and ellipses, which are fundamental shapes for drawing any object.

Next, let’s add the strawberry’s leaves:

Beginner drawing practice 5 - step 2

Notice how I’ve simplified the shapes instead of copying them exactly from the reference. Simplifying is a great way to get started without feeling overwhelmed.

Now, let’s add a fun, imaginary detail: a cute little skirt for our dancing strawberry!

Beginner drawing practice 5 - step 3

Once you’re happy with your sketch, go over the outlines with a marker or a black/brown colored pencil. Then, erase the messy parts to get a clean version:

Beginner drawing practice 5 - Step 4

Step 4: Color Your Drawing

It’s time to bring your strawberry to life with some color! I chose to use red for the body, green for the leaves, and pink for the skirt. But feel free to be creative and choose your own colors!

Beginner drawing practice 5 - Step 5

When coloring the body, be sure to avoid the skirt area.

Beginner drawing practice 5 - Step 6

After coloring the leaves, fill in the skirt with pink.

Beginner drawing practice 5 - Step 7

Awesome! Your drawing is really coming to life now. Ready for the next step?

Step 5: Add Details and Shading

To make your drawing look less flat, let’s add some shading. Imagine dividing your strawberry into five vertical sections. Use a darker shade of red, green, and pink to shade the right sections:

Beginner drawing practice 5 - Step 8

Tip: If you don’t have darker shades, just add more layers of the existing colors. It works just as well!

Next, let’s add some small white dots to mimic the strawberry seeds. This little detail makes it look even more realistic:

Beginner drawing practice 5 - Step 9

You might also notice that the skirt has some small curved lines. These details give the skirt more character. Feel free to add your own touches!

Step 6: Bring Your Character to Life

Since this is a “dancing strawberry,” let’s add some personality to it! I gave mine a cute, smiley face with closed eyes (and some eyelashes because my strawberry is a cute girl πŸ’–), tiny rounded hands, and little feet.

Beginner drawing practice 5 - Step 10

You can use this example or get creative and design your own expression. The best part about drawing is telling your own story, so let your imagination run wild!

Beginner drawing practice 5 - Complete

And You’re Done! πŸŽ‰

Congratulations! You’ve completed another adorable artwork. I hope you enjoyed today’s beginner drawing practice. If you’re excited to keep going, feel free to join me in the next Level 1 drawing exercise.

A great way to keep learning is to watch time-lapse videos created by other artists. Here’s one example from my YouTube channel:

Thank you so much for drawing with me today! I hope this Blog continues to inspire and support you on your creative journey.
