Hello! It’s time for another easy and fun drawing practice for absolute beginner artists. In today’s Level 1 exercise, we’ll create a cute and fun chili pepper character through a simple step-by-step drawing guide.
If this is your first time visiting my blog—welcome! π I highly recommend checking out Simple Drawing Guidelines for Absolute Beginner Artists to get an overview of this blog and how these exercises are structured. My goal is to help absolute beginners start their art journey with fun, stress-free exercises. Whether you're new to drawing or looking to spark creativity, I hope these exercises will inspire you!
Now, let’s dive into today’s drawing practice!
Step 1: Gather Your Drawing Supplies
I’ve said this before, but it’s worth repeating.
You don’t need expensive supplies to start drawing!
Here’s all you need:
A simple pencil
An eraser
A piece of paper
Some colored pencils or crayons (optional)
Don’t let fancy tools stop you from drawing. What truly matters is practice!
Step 2: Observe the Reference Photo
Before we start sketching, let’s take a close look at our reference photo:

Try to visualize the overall shape of the chili pepper. If you’ve completed Beginner Drawing Exercise 3: How to Draw a Cute, Intelligent Carrot, you might notice that this chili pepper is like an upgraded version of that carrot—an imperfect ellipse but with more curves!
New to drawing imperfect ellipses? No worries! You can practice them in Level 0’s Easy First Drawing Exercise for Beginners.
Step 3: Sketch the Basic Shape
Grab your pencil and sketch a curved, imperfect ellipse on your paper.
You’ll notice my version is quite round and chubby compared to the reference photo. That’s totally fine! Art is all about style, and I love making things look cute and chunky. So don’t stress if your sketch looks a little different—embrace your unique touch! π
Next, sketch the top part of the chili pepper—the leafy “hat.”
Feel free to adjust the hat’s shape. You can make it bigger, more detailed, or super simple—it’s your drawing!
Once you’re happy with your sketch, use an eraser to clean up any unnecessary lines.
Step 4: Add Color
Time to bring your drawing to life with color! For this exercise, you’ll only need red and green, but feel free to experiment.
Want a yellow or green chili pepper? Go for it!
Step 5: Add Shading
Shading is what makes your drawing pop and look less flat. Here’s a simple trick:
Imagine your chili pepper is divided into three vertical sections.
Darken one side by adding extra layers of red and green.
Tip: If you don’t have multiple shades of red or green, just apply more layers of the same color to create a darker effect!
Step 6: Get Creative!
This is my favorite part—turning our chili pepper into a character! π
What kind of personality does your chili pepper have?
Is it happy, angry, silly, or sleepy?
Add fun features like eyes, a mouth, arms, or even tiny legs!
In my version, I gave my chili pepper two big grumpy eyes, a simple mouth with two tiny fangs, and little hands holding forks. You can follow my design or create your own unique character.
Bonus: You can also decorate the background to add a fun story to your artwork!
