Hi, and welcome to another beginner-friendly drawing practice at Level 1! 🎨
If you're new to this blog, check out the post Simple Drawing Guidelines for Absolute Beginner Artists to understand how the content is structured. In today’s exercise, we’ll go through a few simple steps to draw a grape cluster 🍇.
This exercise is slightly different from previous ones because I’ll demonstrate the sketching process in more detail. Let’s get started! ✨
Step 1: Gather Your Drawing Tools ✏️
For today’s exercise, you’ll need just a few simple tools:
A piece of paper
A pencil
An eraser
Colored pencils (I used green, pear, and brown, but feel free to choose any colors you like!)
That’s all you need! Super easy, right? Now, let’s move on. 😊
Step 2: Select a Reference Photo 📸
Finding the perfect reference photo can be time-consuming, but don’t worry—I’ve already chosen one for you! Take a close look at the grape cluster below:

At first glance, this reference photo might seem complicated, and you may not know where to start. But I promise, the drawing steps are super simple! Let's break it down. 🖌️
Step 3: Sketch, Sketch, Sketch
This step includes several small steps, so grab your pencil and paper, and let’s start sketching together!
1️⃣ First, imagine you’re drawing a slice of pizza 🍕. Sketch a rounded triangle like this:
2️⃣ Now, add a branch and a leaf:
3️⃣ Time to draw the grapes! Sketch a random number of small circles inside the triangle shape. Don't worry about making them perfect.
4️⃣ To complete our sketch, add some curves and veins to the leaf for extra details:
🎉 Great job! Your sketch is complete. Let’s refine it in the next step.
Step 4: Refine the Sketch
To refine our drawing, use a green marker (or a black/brown one if you don’t have green). Even a colored pencil will work!
First, redraw the front grapes (the circles that are most visible). Then, add the rest of the grapes in the cluster.
Finally, erase all unnecessary pencil marks for a clean, refined version of your drawing.
Step 5: Add Color
Now for the fun part—coloring! 🌈
Pick your favorite grape color and fill in the shapes. In my example, I love green grapes, so I used pear green:
Next, choose a shade of green for the leaf:
Lastly, don’t forget the branch! A simple brown color will do:
Your drawing looks amazing! Now, let’s add the final touches.
Step 6: Finalizing Your Drawing
To make our grapes look more three-dimensional, let’s add some shading!
Use a darker shade of your grape color to add depth. If you don’t have multiple shades, simply layer the same color to create a similar effect.
Now, do the same for the leaf and branch:
🎊 Your drawing is almost finished! To complete your artwork, consider filling in the background. You can also add some fun details like cute facial expressions on the grapes or extra elements to tell a story. Let your creativity shine! 🌟
