Beginner Drawing Exercise 8: How to Draw a Dreamy Mangosteen

 Welcome back, welcome back!

Are you ready for another easy and fun Level 1 drawing practice for absolute beginner artists? Today, we’ll be drawing a dreamy mangosteen! ✨

Beginner Drawing Exercise 8 - Intro

If you’ve been practicing with me through previous exercises, you’ll see that this one is just as simple and enjoyable! But if this is your first time visiting this blog, no worries! Let’s grab our drawing tools and go through a few easy steps to create our dreamy mangosteen. 🎨

Step 1: Grab Your Pencil ✏️

I’ve mentioned this many times across my blog posts—you don’t need fancy art supplies to start drawing! Just prepare these basic tools:

  • A piece of paper

  • A pencil

  • A few colored pencils

  • A marker (optional)

That’s all you need! Now, let’s move on. 😊

Step 2: Observe the Reference Photo

Here’s the reference image we’ll be using for this exercise:

When studying a reference photo, focus on the overall shape of the object and break it down into smaller parts. This might sound complicated, but don’t worry—we’ll see just how easy it is in the next step!

Step 3: Sketch Your Mangosteen

First, grab your pencil and sketch an imperfect circle:

If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of ‘imperfect circles’, check out my post Easy First Drawing Exercise for Beginners. These shapes are essential as they serve as the foundation for many drawings!

Next, sketch the green leafy top of the mangosteen:

Don’t forget to sketch the tiny base at the bottom!

Now, refine your sketch by tracing over it with a black/brown marker (or a colored pencil if you don’t have a marker).

Lastly, erase any unnecessary pencil marks. Yay! Your drawing is now ready for coloring! 🎉

Step 4: Color Your Mangosteen

Time to bring our mangosteen to life with colors! Be as creative as you want! 🌈

I chose purple for the body of the mangosteen:

Now, let’s color the green leafy top:

To make the drawing more three-dimensional, let’s add some shading! Use the same colors but apply extra layers to create depth.

Shading the top part can be a bit trickier. Here’s my example:

Looking great so far! Let’s move to the final step. ✨

Step 5: Finalize Your Drawing

🌟 Now comes the most fun part—bringing our mangosteen to life!

First, fill in the background to complete the scene:

Next, add some simple curves and circles to create a fun facial expression for your mangosteen! In my example, I gave it a sad face 😢:

Finally, add more details to tell your own story! In my case, my mangosteen is sad because he just lost his favorite balloon. 🎈😭

How does your mangosteen feel? What kind of story are you telling through your artwork? Let your imagination run wild!
