Beginner Drawing Exercise 3: How to Draw a Cute, Intelligent Carrot

Hi! Welcome back to another simple drawing practice in Level 1 for absolute beginner artists. If this is your first time visiting my blog, I recommend checking out Simple Drawing Guidelines for Absolute Beginner Artists. This post will give you an overview of the blog's purpose and how the drawing exercises are structured by level to support aspiring artists.

In today’s easy drawing exercise, we’ll create a cute and intelligent version of a carrot.

Beginner drawing exercise 3 - Intro

I promise that anyone can follow along—no special talent required! All you need is a passion for drawing. Now, let’s begin this fun and easy practice.

Step 1: Gather Your Drawing Supplies

I say this often, but it’s worth repeating: as a beginner, you don’t need expensive art supplies. A few basic tools will do:

  • A pencil

  • A piece of paper

  • An eraser

  • Colored pencils or crayons (optional)

That’s all you need! Let’s start drawing.

Step 2: Observe the Reference Photo

Before we draw, let’s take a close look at a reference photo. Drawing from imagination is difficult for beginners, so using reference images is a great way to learn. Even professional artists use them!

Don’t worry if any part of the carrot seems complicated—we’ll simplify everything into easy steps.

Step 3: Sketch the Basic Shape

Grab your pencil and sketch the overall shape of the carrot.

Beginner drawing exercise 3 - Step 1

Use loose, curved lines to create an imperfect ellipse. Don’t stress about perfection—just let your hand flow naturally. Once you’re happy with the shape, erase unnecessary lines to refine it.

If you haven’t practiced drawing basic shapes like circles and ellipses before, check out the Easy First Drawing Exercise for Beginners, which is part of Level 0.

Step 4: Draw the Leaves

The leaves may look complex, but we can simplify them!

Beginner drawing exercise 3 - Step 2a leaves

Instead of drawing every detail, use just a few curved lines for the midribs and simple rounded shapes for the leaves. Adjust them however you like—make them more elliptical or add extra curves.

Beginner drawing exercise 3 - Step 2

Now, your carrot sketch is complete. Let’s add color!

Step 5: Add Color

Time to bring our carrot to life!

  • Use orange or yellow for the body.

  • Use green for the leaves.

Beginner drawing exercise 3 - Step 3

Want to be more creative? Feel free to experiment with colors. There are no strict rules!

Step 6: Create Depth with Shading

To make the carrot look less flat, we’ll add some simple shading.

Beginner drawing exercise 3 - Step 4

In my example, I divided both the body and leaves into two sections and used a darker shade on one side. This creates depth and makes the drawing more dynamic.

Step 7: Add Texture

Let’s make the carrot even more realistic! Add small, darker orange or yellow lines to mimic the natural texture of a carrot.

Beginner drawing exercise 3 - Step 5

Step 8: Give Your Carrot Personality!

Now comes the most fun part—adding character!

Try drawing a cute face with glasses to give your carrot an intelligent look.

Beginner drawing exercise 3 - Step 6

Yay! Your cute, intelligent carrot is complete! Even though this exercise had several steps, they were all simple and easy to follow. I hope you had fun drawing this quirky little carrot.

Beginner Drawing Exercise 2: How to Draw Simple and Cute Eggplants

Hi there! Welcome to the second drawing exercise for absolute beginners. 🎨 In our previous exercise, Beginner Drawing Exercise 1: How to Draw Cute Pumpkins, we learned how to use basic shapes like imperfect circles to create adorable drawings. Today, we’ll apply those skills to draw something equally fun and simple—two cute eggplants!

Beginner drawing exercise 2 - Eggplants
This exercise is as easy as the last one, so don’t worry if you’re still getting comfortable with drawing. Let’s dive in!

Step 1: Gather Your Tools

Here’s a reminder: starting your art journey doesn’t require fancy supplies. Keep it simple! You’ll need:

  • A piece of white paper

  • A basic pencil

  • An eraser

  • Some colored pencils or crayons (optional, but fun!)

Step 2: Study the Reference Photo

As beginners, drawing straight from imagination can feel overwhelming. That’s why using reference photos is such a helpful starting point. Here’s our reference image for this exercise:

Take a close look at the photo. Notice the overall shape of the eggplants. What do they remind you of?

Step 3: Sketch the Shapes

Let’s break this down step by step:

  1. Start with the main shapes.
The overall shape of each eggplant is an imperfect ellipse. Sketch two ellipses on your paper using small, curved lines.

    Beginner drawing exercise 2 - Step 1
Tip: If you’re not used to drawing imperfect ellipses, check out the Easy First Drawing Exercise for Beginners to practice this basic skill.

  2. Add the green tops.
Look at the reference again and sketch the shape of the green parts at the top of each eggplant.

    Beginner Drawing Exercise 2 - Step 2

  3. Clean up your sketch.
Once you’re happy with your drawing, use an eraser to remove any extra or overlapping lines.

    Beginner Drawing Exercise 2 - Step 3

Great work! You’ve now sketched the foundation of your eggplants.

Step 4: Add Some Color

Now it’s time to bring your drawing to life!

  1. Grab your purple colored pencil or crayon and color in the main part of each eggplant.

    Beginner Drawing Exercise 2 - Step 4

  2. Next, use a green color for the tops.

    Beginner Drawing Exercise 2 - Step 5

  3. To make your drawing more dynamic, add a layer of darker shades for depth. For example, use a deeper purple or green to create shadows.

    Beginner Drawing Exercise 2 - Step 6

Step 5: Decorate and Personalize

This is where the fun begins! Use your creativity to make your drawing more lively. In my version, I added eyes, mouths, tiny hands, and feet to turn the eggplants into cute characters.

Here’s the story I imagined: one eggplant friend has fallen over and is calling for help from the other.

Beginner Drawing Exercise 2 - Step 7

What story will your eggplants tell? Add whatever details you like—funny expressions, hats, or even a tiny background scene. The possibilities are endless!

Beginner Drawing Exercise 1: How to Draw Cute Pumpkins

Welcome to the first drawing exercise for absolute beginners at Level 1! In our previous post, Easy First Drawing Exercise for Beginners, we practiced drawing the most fundamental shape: imperfect circles. In this simple step-by-step exercise, we’ll take what we’ve learned and use it to create something fun—a cute pumpkin family!

Step 1: Preparation

As a beginner artist, you don’t need fancy tools. The most basic supplies are enough to get started. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A pencil

  • An eraser

  • A piece of paper

  • Colored pencils or crayons (optional)

Step 2: Examine Your Reference

Take a look at this reference photo:

Beginner drawing exercise 1 - reference
Source: Pinterest

The first step in drawing is studying your reference. For beginners, drawing purely from imagination isn’t necessary (or even recommended). Using a reference helps you understand your subject better, including its shape, proportions, and light effects. Training your eyes to analyze a reference photo before picking up your pencil is an essential habit for improving your drawing skills.

Step 3: Sketching

The basic shapes of the three pumpkins in our reference are, unsurprisingly, imperfect circles! Start by lightly sketching three imperfect circles on your paper. Once you’re happy with the placement and size, refine them slightly for a cleaner look. Congratulations—you now have the base shapes of your pumpkins!

Beginner drawing exercise 1 - Step 1

Step 4: Add Details

Next, add details to your pumpkins. Draw curved lines from the top to the bottom of each pumpkin to create the characteristic grooves. Don’t worry if your lines are messy—this is part of the process. Finally, add simple stems to each pumpkin.

Beginner drawing exercise 1 - Step 2

Once you’re satisfied, use an eraser to clean up any unnecessary lines, leaving a refined sketch of your pumpkins.

Beginner drawing exercise 1 - Step 3

Step 5: Add Color

Now it’s time to bring your pumpkins to life with color! Grab your colored pencils or crayons and choose colors like orange and green—or get creative with your own palette. In my version, I stuck to the realistic colors from the reference photo.

Beginner drawing exercise 1 - Step 4

Step 6: Final Touches

Your pumpkins are almost complete! To make them more interesting and personal, consider adding some decorative touches.

Beginner drawing exercise 1 - Step 5
For example, you can:

  • Use darker shades of orange or light brown to add depth and shadows to your pumpkins.

  • Draw simple shadows beneath the pumpkins for a grounded effect.

  • Add playful details like faces or tiny hands to give your pumpkins personality.

Here’s my finished version:

Beginner drawing exercise 1 - Coloring

Congratulations!

You’ve completed your first drawing exercise for beginners! 🎉 I hope this activity was enjoyable and helped you feel more comfortable starting your art journey.

What’s Next?

Keep practicing by drawing other objects that feature imperfect circles. This will not only improve your drawing skills but also sharpen your observation skills—an essential part of becoming a great artist.

If you don’t have time to find your reference photos on your own, I’ll love to help you in many more drawing exercises. So remember to come back to this blog often, I’ll be super happy if this blog can become one of the useful resources for you to practice drawing.
